Playing Against Better Players

When you are up against tough competition, sometimes the fun poker game that you are used to becomes a challenge and feels a whole lot more like real work. This can ruin your evening; it can also ruin your bankroll if you are not careful. There are two instances when you will come across good players at UB.com: in a ring game or in the tournament setting.

Confronting superior players in a ring game is easy—you don’t. Rather than waste your time and money by trying to beat them, you should simply get up and leave with the hopes of finding an easier table, otherwise you may want to go play at a live casino. If you are in a game over your head, don’t be afraid to find a new table. You are playing poker for two reasons: fun and money. If you stand no chance of winning, you won’t be accomplishing either of these two things.

In tournaments, you don’t have a choice but to play against the people at your table. If there is someone at your table who is clearly a superior player, try and avoid playing in the hands that they are playing in. This will not be possible every hand, however. You will want to make sure that when you are playing against a superior player that you are bringing your best game forward. This might sound obvious, but many people simply don’t try against these players. Play your best and avoid getting set up by tactics such as slow-playing and semi-bluffs. If you have created an impression as a tight player at the table, use this to your advantage by increasing your bluffing frequency against these players. Just don’t bluff too much because a superior player is sure to catch on.
